Youth Justice
Building Strong Teams for Uncharted Journeys
Building Strong Teams for the Journey Ahead
Delivering exceptional care begins with the people who guide the journey.
Over the past year, Banyan has taken a deliberate step beyond traditional approaches by reimagining recruitment and retention across its out-of-home Youth Justice Programs. Like navigating unfamiliar terrain, this shift required clarity of vision, adaptability, and a commitment to doing things differently in order to achieve stronger outcomes.
At the centre of this work was the introduction of a centralized recruitment model—bringing consistency, focus, and intention to how talent is identified across all Youth Justice sites. Through this approach, candidates are now evaluated using a shared framework that prioritizes not only experience, but the qualities that matter most in this work: strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to trauma-informed, youth-centred practice.
Standardized screening tools and interview processes allow for earlier and more meaningful insight into each candidate’s potential. The result is a strengthened ability to build teams that are not only capable but aligned in values and purpose—ready to meet youth wherever they are on their journey.
At the same time, Banyan has broadened its perspective on recruitment—recognizing that the right path is not always a straight one.
Rather than limiting candidates to a single role or location, the organization has adopted a more integrated approach across its Youth Justice portfolio. Individuals who may not be the right fit for one program are now thoughtfully considered for other opportunities where their strengths, experience, and interests can be better aligned. This flexibility ensures that strong candidates remain engaged and valued, while supporting a more effective and responsive hiring process.
The result is a workforce strategy that is both resilient and dynamic—one that maximizes talent, strengthens retention, and builds cohesion across programs.
By forging this path, Banyan continues to invest in what matters most: people. The people who support, guide, and walk alongside youth every day—helping them navigate their own paths forward, no matter how complex or uncertain the terrain may be.
“Building strong teams means recognizing potential, adapting the route, and ensuring the right people are there for every step of the journey.”
